Tamarack glass artist finds inspiration in nature, memory of her father

Kathy Hanby enjoys the simple life – family, a little land, and her art.

She’s been creating different types of art for as long as she can remember. She’s made candles, blankets, and quilts, but then she found her real passion – glass! Kathy designs glass jewelry, keepsake boxes, and wall art.

Kathy has worked with glass for over 15 years. She learned her craft through her own experimentation and advice from other artists.

“Glass is a magical material. I have no rules for working with it. I just trust my instincts,” Kathy said.

Originally from Delaware, Kathy fell in love with West Virginia when she visited her grandparents there as a child. When she later fell in love with Gary Hanby, they decided to make their lives among the rolling hills. They found a piece of property in Lost Creek, W.Va. and turned it into their own slice of “almost heaven.”

Kathy and Gary have worked side by side throughout their lives. They initially worked as antique dealers. Gary also made woodcrafts and Kathy assisted him and helped sell his work. Now Gary assists Kathy with her glasswork. Their first gallery was Mountain Laurel in Berkley Springs, W.Va.

Kathy finds that being enveloped by nature is perfect for the artistic lifestyle. She finds both peace and inspiration in her surroundings.

Kathy has been displaying her work at Tamarack: The Best of West Virginia for 10 years. In 2011, WV Living magazine declared her one of Tamarack’s top 15 artists. She credits Tamarack with her ability to make a living doing what she loves.

“If it wasn’t for Tamarack, I wouldn’t be able to do this. They found all of us in the valleys and hilltops and brought us together,” she said.
